Speech-Language Therapy
Instructor: Mrs. Lee
Speech-language therapy is provided for students who meet eligibility as a student with a speech language impairment (SLI) as outlined by the State Department of Education eligibility guidelines.  In order to meet eligibility as a student with SLI the student must meet two criteria:  the student must demonstrate a delay or disorder in one or more of the following areas:  articulation, phonology, language, fluency, or voice and this delay/disorder must be determined to negatively impact the student’s functioning within their regular education environment.  Both componants must be present - the delay/disorder and the negative impact in the regular environment.

Students with SLI are provided speech-language therapy services during the school day in small groups and/or individually depending upon their needs.  The types and amounts of services are determined by an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team.  The IEP team develops an IEP for each student who requires therapy services.  There are approximately 80-100 students who will be receiving speech-language therapy at the Primary School as we begin this 2010-2011 year.  Students are placed and graduate from the therapy program throughout the school year on an individual basis depending upon their individual needs.

Welcome
August 17, 2011

Dear Parents/Caregivers:
Wow…how the summer has flown! We’re back and ready for a wonderful year of learning in Speech Therapy this year. We will be working on improving your child’s communication skills by addressing his/her individual goals and objectives as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Please refer to your copy of the IEP for your child’s speech targets.

The Speech Therapists at BLPS have developed our Speech Program around monthly themes that we feel will help the students make connections between Speech Therapy and the general curriculum. You can find these themes on my webpage at http://blps.groupfusion.net. In addition, we will be placing a very high emphasis on literacy and reading, which will be incorporated into our speech lessons.

Home practice will be sent on the basis of each student’s individual readiness and need. When received, please use this homework to help your child build awareness of his/her speech targets in the home environment. Additional homework assignments may be sent upon your request. Always remember that home practice for speech sounds, language skills, and fluency skills can be accessed through links on my webpage.

Please feel free to contact me anytime at 532-4452. I look forward to helping your child grow in his/her speech and language skills this year.
Sincerely,
Rebekah N. Lee

Speech Grades/Progress Reports
Speech students receive a quarterly progress report as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEP).  Speech therapy is not graded in the same way that regular classroom work is graded.  The IEP progress report for all special education students documents the following levels of progress:
NI = Needs Improvement
SP = Slowly Progressing
P = Progressing
M = Mastered
Progress reports are sent home at the end of each quarter (every 9 weeks).

School Behavior

Our school has a behavioral program in place called Positive Behavior Supports.  All of our faculty and staff work together to follow the same behavior system allowing our students consistency throughout their school day.  The same rules apply in the hallway, in homeroom class, in art, music, P.E., in speech class, on the playground etc.  Our system focuses on reinforcing students for making good choices.  While there are consequences in place for negative choices, those are only pursued after attempts for positive reinforcement have been put into place.  We have 3 simple rules for the entire school:
1.  Be Safe
2.  Be Responsible
3.  Be Respectful
Students earn school coins for following these rules.  Just as you and I earn our paycheck for following our work procedures and doing our jobs, our students can earn coins for following school rules and doing their "jobs".  Ask your child about our three school rules to see if they can tell you what they are and give some examples of what each one means.
